This simple fun activity post is going to be a little different than the rest of them, but I did say I would share parenting adventures…and misadventures. My son is obsessed with dinosaurs. He has tons of them, he can tell you the names of all of them, he loves them. For Valentine’s Day I made heart-shaped cookies with a little twist. I took one of his toy dinosaurs and made tracks in them. The cookies turned out exactly the way they were supposed to. Then there was what happened the second time I tried this.
What I Did The First Time
– I made sugar cookie dough and chilled it in the fridge for several hours.
– Rolled out the dough and cut out heart shapes.
– Pressed the toy dinosaur feet into the hearts, deep enough to make an impression, but not all the way through, then chilled it in the fridge for several more hours.
– Baked them, and they turned out amazing. They kept their heart-shape and you could clearly see the dinosaur tracks.
What I Did The Second Time
This time I thought I would save myself some time and use premade cookie dough. It’s already chilled from the fridge and I could just slice it and go. I also thought it would add a little bit more fun to paint the dinosaur tracks with food coloring.
Items We Used
– Premade sugar cookie dough
– Cookie sheets
– Toy dinosaurs
– Food coloring
– Q-tips
Instead of chilling them for several hours, I got a little impatient and only chilled them for a little less than an hour.
After it came out of the oven, my husband tried to salvage the cookies by making new dinosaur tracks in the cookies while they were cooling. Which might be an easier modification to this activity.
So if this failed, why did I post this? I strongly believe that this is a good simple fun activity. Even though the cookies didn’t turn out the way I intended, we still had fun making them and we still had cookies in the end. The point is to have fun with it.
