Sometimes it’s a little fun to be destructive, and sometimes it’s okay to be a little destructive. My son has a Spring birthday, so many of his presents consist of outside activities, which always include a new sidewalk chalk set. He always puts it to good use, but like many kids he is pretty rough with them, and they break quite often. So now when he gets a new set, we can take out the old, broken ones and make sidewalk chalk paint art. I worked in a daycare for many years and some of the paints came in powder form, and this is what gave me the idea to make the chalk into paint. My son loves doing this outdoor activity, and I hope your kids do to.
Items You Will Need For This Simple Fun Activity:
2 storage bags
Chalk pieces of similar color
A hammer
A cloth or dishtowel
A paintbrush for every color you’re going to make
A plastic cup for every color you’re going to make
Steps For This Simple Fun Activity:
1. Put the pieces of chalk in one bag and seal it, then put that bag in the second bag and seal it. I would highly recommend double bagging, because the first bag tends to get holes in it. Make sure you get all the air out of each bag. Lay the bags flat and cover it with the cloth, also to reduce the bags tearing. Hammer the bags firmly, but carefully until the chalk pieces are a fine powder. This may take a little while, be patient, the finer the powder, the better. This would be a great time to get the kids involved.
2. After crushing the chalk into powder, empty the baggies into the plastic cup. Slowly add water until you get a good thick, liquid consistency.
3. Go outside and do a little art in the sun.
This Is What Happened When We Did This Simple Fun Activity:
This would also be a good activity if you are teaching your child the secondary colors (what two colors make this color?). This makes a great outdoor activity, but if the weather isn’t cooperating, you can also do this art activity in the garage.
