This is a simple fun activity that works fine motor skills. One of my co-teachers did this activity with some younger toddlers and I thought it was such a great idea.
There are so many learning toys out there that exercise lacing and weaving. This simple fun activity only requires two items you probably already have at home, or you can easily find at a dollar store.
Items You’ll Need For This Simple Fun Activity:
- A strainer with large holes
- Pipe cleaners
What Happened When We Did This Simple Fun Activity:
I thought my one year-old daughter would have fun with this activity, but it was my four year-old son who was really enjoying it. At first we were just sticking the pipe cleaners through the holes, but then we made it a little more challenging. I weaved one pipe cleaner through the side of the strainer, and then my son copied me. He spent the next thirty minutes weaving and unweaving the pipe cleaners into the strainer.
This is a simple fun activity that doesn’t require a lot of equipment or set up. This is a good fine motor skills activity you and your kids can do together, or they can do independently. You can also modify it using yarn or ribbon.

This is awesome—I haven’t heard of this, but I like it. Im gonna have to try it and see how my kids enjoy it. Thanks!
What a fun + creative activity that fosters motor skill development! To boot, it seems like something that has little clean up associated with it, so that’s a bonus. Toddler parents know what I’m talking about.
