Reading to your children is an amazing bonding experience that also helps to develop their language and literacy skills. Story time can be just as fun for the parents, but not when you’re reading the same five or six stories over and over again. Here are a few amazing books that are sure to liven up story time and get your family in the Halloween spirit.
Frankenbunny
Frankenbunny written by Alice Brereton and illustrated by Jill Esbaum is a fun read about Spencer, a little bunny, who is always being frightened by his older brothers. They scare him with stories of Frankenbunny’s “crusty fangs, flashing red eyes, and ginormous paws.” Spencer learns to conquer his fears and gives his older brothers a fright of their own.
Zombie In Love
Zombie in Love written by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by Scott Campbell is a hilarious zombie love story. Poor Mortimer the Zombie is unlucky in finding love. He puts an ad in the paper trying to find his perfect girl at the Cupid’s Ball. Will he meet his dream girl? This was one of my favorite new reads. It was such a cute and clever twist on the classic love story.
The Curious Little Witch
The Curious Little Witch written and illustrated by Lieve Baeten follows the curious little witch Lizzy as she flies through the air. While looking through a window a window of a curious house, Lizzy crashes through the window, breaking her broom. Lizzy goes exploring the house trying to find someone who can help her fix her broom. On her little adventure she meets several witches with different talents, but none that can fix her broom, until she comes to the tinkering witch. This is a great story that the family will enjoy.
There’s a Nightmare in My Closet
There’s a Nightmare in My Closet written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer has been one of my childhood favorites. As little kids, we all remember being afraid of what’s in the closet or turning out the lights and running to the safety of the bed covers. One night this little boy has had enough of his nightmare and hatches a plan to catch his nightmare. He soon discovers that his nightmare isn’t so scary after all.
Room on The Broom
Room on the Broom written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler is a wonderful rhyming book about friendship and inclusivity. The witch and her cat are out for a night-time broom ride, but the witch keeps losing things as she flies through the air. As they recover each item, they pick up a new friend along the way. They soon learn the broom might not be big enough. When the witch crosses the path of a hungry dragon, she discovers just how helpful her new friends are. This is a great bedtime story filled with humor and adventure.
We hope your family enjoys these books as much as our family has.
